Listen to 6th graders explore the history of two influencial immigrant groups in Minneapolis

We’re back with our newest installment of Local History Matters, a collaboration with Ramsey Middle School.  This week, we hear students discuss the importance of places and institutions that celebrate pieces of the Twin Cities’ legacy as a new home for immigrant groups.  In the first piece, students visit the Somali Museum of Minnesota and learn about the rich culture that a relatively new refugee group has brought to Minneapolis.  In the second, they travel to the Seward neighborhood and visit the Milwaukee Avenue Historic District, a former alley that was developed in the late 1800’s to house scores of low-income Scandinavian immigrants.

Join us every Tuesday for more short recordings that uncover the history hiding in plain sight all around our city.
