Learn more about the Lee Family and the Mayday Parade

Local History Matters

This week, we present two strong recordings from our 6th-grade partners at Ramsey Middle School.  In the first, we learn about the history of the Lee Family.  In 1931, the Lees were one of the first African American families to purchase a home in South Minneapolis, and over the course of the next year they endured thousands of protesters who threw rocks and paint at their home, followed them to work and school, and even killed their pet dog.  Our second recording teaches us a little more about one of Southside’s most celebrated events, the Mayday Parade.
